Recently, I asked Sara Raach some questions about her upcoming, swashbuckling, release, and I am overjoyed to share her answers with you all! These Rebel Waves sounds like it is going to be quite an adventure with some pirate heartthrobs and a rollercoaster of emotions. I need to start preparing myself now for the August release.

Here were the questions and her answers:

1. How would you summarize These Rebel Waves?

A soldier, a pirate, and a prince have to fight for their futures while running from their pasts. And there’s magic plants and kissing and stuff.

2. What was your inspiration for writing These Rebel Waves?

I’ve always loved the Golden Age of Piracy, as well as twisted religion and complex politics. But what really spurred the idea (like the very original baby idea) was a geology class I took and the term “stream piracy.” It’s a real thing. Look it up. My super bored brain heard the word “piracy,” and river pirates were born!

3. What can readers expect in this new duology?

A lot of heavy themes and characters that make me incoherently squeal. Lu, Vex, and Ben all undergo a lot of growth and conflict, facing things that are incredibly personal to me, like belief, trust, and how to rely on themselves.

4. Who was your favorite character to write and why? Was there a least favorite?

My favorite character to write has to be Vex. He’s just so FUN, and 90% of his responses to things are some kind of snarky, sarcastic quip.

My least favorite has to be Ben (though, admittedly, he’s now the character that most makes me incoherently squeal). Nailing his motivations was such a process — every draft, for the first six drafts, brought a new and different version of his character. He just wouldn’t cooperate, but all his months of fighting me paid off in who is now my precious smol prince son.

5. How does this series compare/contrast with the past books you have written?

I like to think I took all the things I learned from writing SNOW LIKE ASHES and expanded on them. A deeper world, fuller characters. As an artist, I have to hope that each product I put out builds on the last one — so hopefully you find all the things you loved about SNOW LIKE ASHES in THESE REBEL WAVES, but more!

6. What is your favorite book/genre to read?

Generally, adult fantasy! But I am CRAZY picky. A few of my all time favorites are Sharon Shinn, CS Pacat, and Seth Dickinson.
